As Do It Yourself-ers there are times when we jump into a project without thinking about our safety, especially with things that we’ve done a hundred times before!
When planning a project whether around the house or at any other location including the necessary safety measures is of the utmost importance. Paying close attention to you what you are doing and working deliberately and thoughtfully will save you a lot of heartache, headaches and injuries in the long run.
Wear the proper protection for every task
- Be sure to wear gloves that are made for your tasks
- Chemical Resistant gloves when working with solvents such as paint remover, heavy duty cleaners, spray paints, etc.
- Proper eye protection will save your sight
- Safety Glasses or Goggles are a must to protect you from flying debris, dust and chemical splashes
- Always wear safety glasses when using any power tool, hammers or drills
- Wear dust masks or respirator when using strong chemical, sawing wood and MDF, and during sanding and painting. Also properly ventilate work areas as recommended for the tools and chemicals you are using
- Earplugs or headphones should always be worn to prevent hearing damage around loud equipment including compressors, nail guns, ramsets, drills, lawn equipment, and other loud devices
- Proper foot protection is also important which may include steel toe shoes or boots depending on your task
- Always wear proper clothing for your task and work site including a hardhat when necessary
- Keep a chemical fire extinguisher handy
Organization is a Must!
- Keep the floor clear. Reduce clutter and keep cables and electrical cords out of walkways.
- Keep floors clean. Wipe up grease, water, and other liquids immediately. Don’t wax floors in the area where you are working.
- Store tools in their proper place when they aren’t being used to prevent tripping over them and damage to them and other surfaces.
- Keep your work area clean and don’t let debris accumulate by sweeping or vacuuming frequently
Power Tool Safety
-
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for using their tools and materials.
-
Dull tools are unsafe and can harm you and your work. Maintain your tools. Always work with sharp cutting blades. Clean tools according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Unplug power tools before loading them, changing blades or bits, or making adjustments.
- Never use any power tool in the rain.
- Never alter or remove the blade guard on a power saw.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area and power tools, as well as away from harmful materials, adhesives, and solvents.
- Keep a clean work site and don’t let debris accumulate.
- Always use the correct tools for the job. It is worth investing in high quality equipment as this will be safer and will probably do the job quicker. Never use a tool other than for its intended use.
